We are pleased to invite you to our first Mentorship event prepared for young urbanists and others who are thinking of becoming urban designers. This session is led by urban design industry leaders and past and recent Board Directors of Council for Canadian Urbanism.

Ute Maya Giambattista  B.ARCH, m.pl., RPP, MCIP, LEED AP

Principal, Urban Design, O2 Planning + Design Inc.

Ute is an urbanist with more than 20 years of experience. As an urban designer and planner, Ute approaches her work with the understanding that design can be a vehicle for creating healthy places and communities while being aware of the complexities of urban spaces and the potential of infrastructure to transform the vitality of a place. Integral to all her management and design work is her commitment to the integration of social, economic, and environmentally sustainable practices from the early stages of the process.

 

Ute is a member of the City of Vaughan Design Review Panel and the chair of the Women’s Leadership Initiative Allies in Action sub-committee at the Urban Land Institute.

At the Mentorship Session, Ute will be happy to share her experience in these topics:

Eric Turcotte  MCIP, RPP, MRAIC, OAA, OAQ, LEED AP BD + C

Partner, Urban Strategies Inc.

Eric is an Urban Designer, a Planner and an Architect.  He is a Partner at Urban Strategies Inc. and has over 27 years of experience in Canada, the United States and Europe.  Eric has extensive redevelopment experience in sensitive urban areas in Canada – notably in the GTA, Ottawa, the United States and Europe. As a partner, he has led numerous award-winning downtown revitalization plans, community design plans, transit oriented developments and large scale master plans. He has recently is currently working on the intensification of mall properties including Dufferin Mall, CF Sherway Garden and CF Fairview.

Eric is an Urban Design industry leader, a member of the Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel and the chair of the Brampton Design Review Panel Project.

At the Mentorship Session, Eric will be happy to share his experience on:

Daniel H. Leeming  BA, Dip CP, MES, FCIP, RPP

Founding Partner, The Planning Partnership

Dan’s expertise is combining good urban design with sustainable and public health initiatives to create complete, livable communities. He has received awards from Provincial and National Planning Associations, the private sector and the Minister’s Award for Environmental Excellence from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

Dan is adjunct professor, University of Guelph, taught at the University of Toronto and was the 2014-2015 University of Waterloo ‘Planner in Residence’. He writes on changing energy needs, public health and urban design, aging society, climate change, and sustainable innovation. Dan is Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

At the Mentorship Session, Dan will be happy to share his experience on:

David Gordon  FCIP, RPP, AICP

Professor, School of Urban and Regional Planning, Queen’s University

David received a Doctor of Design degree from the Harvard GSD. He was SURP Director for over a decade and has also taught at McGill, Ryerson, Toronto, Riga, Western Australia, Harvard and Pennsylvania, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. Prior to becoming a full-time professor, David was a principal in an urban design firm and manager in a Toronto waterfront agency. David is Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners, sharing their National Awards four times. 

At the Mentorship Session, David will be happy to share his experience on:

  • Getting into urban design without an architecture degree

  • Waterfront design 

  • Suburban community deign

  • Capital city design

Jana Kelemen  M.Sc.Arch., MUDS, MCIP, RPP

Manager, Heritage and Urban Design, City of Hamilton

Jana is an architect, planner and urban designer with over 25 years of progressive experience in Europe and Canada. Focused on facilitating multi-disciplinary conversations, Jana has led comprehensive visionary projects.

At the Mentorship Session, Jana will be happy to share her experience on:

  • Skills needed to become an urban designer

  • Orienting in the industry for the urbanists new to Canada

  • Working as an urban designer in public sector

Tyson McShane  RPP, MCIP

Manager, Long Range Planning, City of Saskatoon

Tyson has a background in policy development and neighbourhood design, having previously worked for Saskatoon’s land developer, Saskatoon Land which saw him leading the design and development a 650 acre neighbourhood. In his current role, Tyson oversees the development of large scale Sector Plans for the City of Saskatoon, supervising the development of a green infrastructure strategy, and leading a redesign and update of Saskatoon’s Official Community Plan.

At the Mentorship Session, Tyson will be happy to share his experience on:

  • Projects ranging from neighbourhood design to the overall form and structure of a city or region 

  • Integration of all different levels of design (neighbourhood, subdivision, and individual street, public space or building design)
